Historically, Shanxi has been a region where culture and education were promoted, and talents emerged in succession. At the beginning of the last century, Shanxi Grand Academy and Mingxian Academy were founded in Shanxi, setting a precedent for modern Chinese higher education.

The higher education of Shanxi is oriented to connotative, featured, differentiated and high-quality development. There are now 82 universities and colleges in Shanxi, including 33 undergraduate universities and 49 vocational colleges. Among them, 8 universities are authorized to confer doctoral degrees and 11 universities master’s degrees (including doctoral degrees). Shanxi currently has 65 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees and 109 first-level disciplines master’s degrees. Province-wide, there are 52 postdoctoral research centers. Among all the vocational colleges of Shanxi, there are 4 national “double high” construction units, 20 provincial-level quality colleges and 100 backbone majors.
Shanxi is one of the most popular study destinations in China for outstanding young foreign students. There are now 12 colleges and universities in the province that recruit overseas students. International students from about 100 countries have chosen to study in Shanxi for their bachelor’s, master’s or doctor’s degrees.
